Muhsin Usman Hassan '12 MPA '16, a Gates Millennium Scholar from St. Paul, Minn., is a native speaker of Arabic and Kiswahili and has lived in Africa and the Middle East. A Wilson School graduate with a certificate in Near Eastern studies, he seeks to apply his experience to issues of international development, politics, and law. He studied in Egypt for two summers and interned with the Red Cross Society of Kenya. He returned to Kenya the summer of 2011 as an intern with USAID's Office of Transition Initiatives/Nairobi working on Somali refugee issues. Hassan returned to East Africa for his fellowship. Following a year at USAID's Mission in Addis Ababa focused on democracy and governance issues, he completed his fellowship as the Conflict Advisor, Office of Democracy, Human Rights and Governance at USAID's Mission in Nairobi.
